Bathroom trends for 2017
We spend such a great deal of time in our bathrooms, fussing over ourselves, trying to look great, grooming and recharging our batteries. And yet, when it comes to bathroom design, we think of it as a dull and functional space and shy from trying out anything remotely interesting to give it that burst of liveliness, like we do for the rest of our home.
But given that we’re on the threshold of a brand new year, I’ve decided to pick out a few prominent trends for bathrooms in 2017. Let the trends dictate your next bathroom makeover. If you’re out of ideas, our trend guide here will help you make some smart choices for your private cocoon.
TREND: Mixing modern and natural
According to Dubai-based award-winning interior design consultant Ellen Bishop, “Mixing modern finishes with natural materials to create something new is going to be a huge trend in 2017.” In terms of design, think clean lines, clean colours and simplistic arrangement of your bathrooms spaces.
TREND: Basins as statement pieces
Luxury bathroom brand Bagno Design finds the surging popularity of basins as statement pieces a key trend in 2017. What’s more, basins crafted using unusual materials such as metal or stone are likely to be more popular in the New Year. In terms of finishes, chrome is out while nickel, copper, gold are likely to rule.
TREND: Free-flowing spaces
We spoke to Markus Singler, Managing Director, Hansgrohe Middle East who points out that a big trend that has continued is, ‘bathrooms without borders’, thresholds, or even door mechanisms. Floor-level showers flow seamlessly into the rest of the space, inviting one to walk around at leisure. Glass area separation panes may be present, but they are discreet. Get the drift?
TREND: Textured & 3D walls
Another interesting trend that Ellen Bishop points out is the popularity of 3D and heavily textured feature walls. If you like your design bold, you’ll love how a texture or 3D pattern transforms your private space. A mosaic wall is exciting, as are statement over-sized works of art. Go with something intricate and edgy in your bathroom in 2017.
TREND: Bringing nature indoors
“Merging the indoors with the outdoors is going to be a key trend in bathrooms in 2017,” says Markus Singler. Bring in some green and you’ll see how calming and refreshing a vibe it lends to your space. Bring home this trend with the inclusion of indoor plants and oodles of natural lighting.
TREND: Sustainable showering
Sustainable practises and technology are highly demanded in design today. And so the trend is all set to continue even in 2017. “The Middle East is uniquely aware of the importance of conserving energy and water, and this continues to be reflected in bathroom designs. When it comes to showering, ecologically sound technology makes a big difference,” points out Markus Singler.
TREND: Individualistic Design
2017 is also leaning towards design that is individualistic. With constant innovation in terms of technology and form, Axor has tested the limits of individualisation with their latest Axor Waterdream 2016 series of spouts. They’ve attempted to create washbasin spouts crafted from alternative materials with no restriction of form, allowing seamless integration while also creating a personal statement. And to achieve this they brought on board, 5 world-renowned designers David Adjaye, FRONT, Werner Aisslinger, GamFratesi, and Jean-Marie Massaud who created unique spouts that thanks to their material, form and function added, character, value and emotion to the water passing through it.
Apart from these prominent trends, restrained elegance and minimalism will be the norm in 2017, especially in newer urban dwellings. What’s more, bathrooms are likely to become smaller, private and more intimate, all while remaining high on comfort, style and functionality.
