Decorating with wallpaper: Tips & tricks

Wallpapers are back being all the rage, and I’m loving it! Because, when  it comes to  transforming your favourite space or corner in a jiffy, nothing quite compares to the decorating value of wallpapers. Quite literally, it can change the architecture of your room. Whatever your mood or choice of colour, pattern or print, there’s loads to choose from.  If you’re all up for experimenting, it doesn’t hurt to go bold and intense; and then again if you like minimalism and muted tones, you have options galore too. Here are some interesting wallpaper designs I rummaged out for your spaces with a tip or trick on how best to use them at home.

  1. Bold is beautiful : An attention-grabbing wallpaper in deep and intense colour tones works well for a feature wall and does wonders to bring a lifeless space devoid of character to everyone’s notice.  Wallpapers as dramatic as these look  stunning in living areas, dining spaces and even bedrooms sometimes. Remember to always go with lighter colours in your choice of fabric,  sleek lighting options and keep furniture to a bare minimum, so the eye isn’t overwhelmed. Always keep in mind that balance is key!

We love the intense yet feminine touch this wallpaper lends to this corner. The grading colours add significantly to its appeal. Notice how the styling is minimal at best.

That glint of antique gold or metal on your wallpaper will lend a sense heightened glamour to your living spaces. We heart metallic design and are recommending your next living room makeover with wallpapers as stylish as this.

This wallpaper has a water colour painting like quality that is as sublime as it is deep. Super sophisticated and versatile, prints like this work beautifully almost anywhere in your home. Couple with metallic accents for contrast, like this copper floor lamp or a metallic console and add to the drama quotient of your spaces.

2. Geometric patterns to love!

To add an additional layer of interest to your spaces, go with textured wallpaper. For now we’re crushing on geometric patterns for their versatility and timelessness. For a dash of modern chic, go with patterns in muted or singular tones. Geometric wallpapers make for excellent additions to bedrooms, and also other common areas like hallways, powder rooms and passages. Use them for an effortless transition between spaces.

3. At home with nature-inspired motifs

Bring in Autumn into your bedroom or living areas with nature-inspired muted tones in your wallpaper designs. The best way to get started is to identify the base colour for your spaces. Nature-inspired motifs in your wallpaper like the one’s I have here will provide a very soothing and calming effect to your spaces. For smaller rooms, go with small repeating patterns. For larger spaces, big botanical prints will lend texture and oodles of interest. When you add nature-inspired wallpapers to your decor, it can elevate your ordinary rooms to extraordinary, in a matter of hours.

We’ve also got you some expert tips from  Ifeanyi Ibekwe, in-house wallpaper specialist at D.tales.

1. Always ensure that the wallpaper complements your curtains, flooring and furniture.
2. Be sure to use eco-friendly glue when installing wallpapers (VOC limits should be kept to a minimum)
3. Avoid using non-woven wallpaper in areas that have high moisture or humidity content (bathrooms and some kitchens)
4. Use light-coloured wallpapers in areas that receive little natural light. This helps the room appear brighter.
